Tips for buying a boat
If you're thinking about buying a boat look no further. Here are some of the most important things to consider.
6 top tips for buyers
- Paper work; ask to see at least a 5 year history of the bills of sale, to confirm ownership of the boats title. A one page VAT invoice will also confirm all VAT has been paid ensuring you won't be liable if you purchase the boat.
- Service history; check how well the boat has been maintained for example, when was the vessel last out of the water and how regularly the engine has been serviced.
- Number of owners; it might sound a simple question but it gives you an idea of the sort of life the boat has had.
- Decide how you will use the boat; is it the right design for your purpose. Boat owners usually make a purchase based on cruising capabilities and space.
- Trial the boat before a survey; you do not have to be an engineer, but the trials will highlight any serious problems with the boat and this in turn will save you money on surveys.
- Speak to a variety of surveyors; before you book one in, and then book the one you feel most comfortable talking to.
